Friday Night Fever parties an excuse to wear costumes, break out old disco records
With the days of "Saturday Night Fever" and John Travolta's hip-thrusting dance moves now long gone, Bacaro Venetian Taverna has decided to bring back the funk with disco music, afros, and polyester leisure suits at their monthly Friday Night Fever parties. With disco balls hanging and The Bee Gees' music blasting, bar manager Ken Kodys serves a packed crowd. He said since the start of Friday Night Fever back in January, the parties have been a huge hit for people of all ages.
"The thing that's been really special for us is that it's been a lot of different age groups," Kodys said, "everyone from college students to people in their 60s and 70s who actually lived through this time."
Kodys said he thinks Friday Night Fever, which falls on the third Friday of every month, has been successful because many people recognize the '70s as an era that was known for going out, having fun, dancing all night, and dressing up. He said that even people who didn't live through it themselves look forward to experiencing to the iconic music and clothes of this popular era. Kodys said it is this fun vibe, with costumes and great music, that has drawn huge crowds to Bacaro time and time again.
"It's been a lot of fun for everyone and it's been a super busy night for the past four months," he said. "It has definitely been three or four times as busy as our other nights."
Another reason why the event has become so popular, said event creator and director Raz Qamruddin, is that people love a good theme party.
"People love to dress up," Qamruddin said. "It's like Halloween once a month."
Friday Night Fever happens on the third Friday of the month. ( CLIFF GRASSMICK) Qamruddin said he came up with Friday Night Fever as a way to give people something look forward to when they go out. He said it is an easy, inexpensive way to have a good time and guests with a birthday during the current month also get a free bottle of champagne if they come out with eight people.
"My vision is to just make it easy and fun; no cover, no hassle," he said. "Everybody walks out of here happy."
For Dieter Heidenbrecht, who is originally from Mainz, Germany but now resides in Boulder, Friday Night Fever is a party he can't miss. Dressed in platforms, an over-sized Afro wig and a gold, shiny pants suit, Heidenbrecht said he has been to the party twice in the past and plans to continue coming back.
"It's a freaking awesome party," Heidenbrecht said. "I like the music, I like to rock out to disco and dress up, and the DJ is awesome."
His favorite song of the night: "We are Family" by Sister Sledge.
CU sophomore Laura Garcia said her friends came across a flyer for Friday Night Fever and also decided it was an event they couldn't miss it. Garcia said she and her friends were having a blast and really getting into the theme of the night.
"I decided to go for a groovy wig and a full '70s look," said Garcia. "I'm having a great time and I'm definitely going to be here next month."
